When a vehicle is purchased through a bank loan or a finance company, the lender places a legal claim on it until the loan is completely repaid. This process is known as Hypothecation, and it is officially recorded in the Registration Certificate (RC).

You are required to remove hypothecation from your RC if:
You have fully repaid the loan or finance taken on your vehicle.
You wish to sell or transfer ownership of the vehicle without any loan liability.
The financier has issued a No Objection Certificate (NOC) confirming the loan closure.
Note: Not updating hypothecation termination in your RC may cause problems in RC transfer, insurance claims, or legal verification in case of accidents or theft.
Gather Essential Documents
Collect all necessary papers, including your vehicle RC, valid insurance, identity/address proof, and the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the bank or financier.Fill Form 35
Complete Form 35, which is the official application form for hypothecation termination. It must be signed by both the vehicle owner and the financier.Submit Application at RTO
Visit your nearest RTO Agent Services office and submit the filled Form 35 along with the required documents and prescribed fees.RTO Verification
The RTO will review the submitted documents and validate the bank’s clearance. Once verified, the hypothecation will be removed from the RC records.Receive Updated RC
After approval, you will receive an updated Registration Certificate (RC) without hypothecation details. This may be issued in physical copy or as a digital RC, depending on the RTO system.
If you wish to remove the hypothecation from your vehicle’s Registration Certificate (RC) after clearing the loan, the following documents are necessary:
Original RC Book/Smart Card
Form 35 duly signed by the vehicle owner and the financer
No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the bank/financier
Valid Insurance Certificate (copy)
Pollution Under Control (PUC) Certificate (copy)
Owner’s Identification Proof (such as Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, etc.)
Address Proof (if required)
Road Tax Payment Receipt (if applicable)

When a vehicle loan is fully repaid, it becomes essential to terminate the hypothecation from the Registration Certificate (RC). This process officially updates the RTO records, ensuring that the vehicle ownership is solely in the name of the owner without any link to the financing institution. Without completing hypothecation termination, the RC will still show the lender’s name, which may create issues in selling, transferring, or insuring the vehicle.
To add hypothecation to your Registration Certificate (RC), you need to apply at the RTO Agent Services office where your vehicle is registered. The process requires submitting Form 34, your loan documents, and the original RC. Once the verification is completed, the RTO will update your RC by adding the respective bank’s name.
The applicable charges for adding hypothecation generally fall between ₹100 and ₹500, depending on the class of vehicle and the concerned RTO office. In some cases, there may be extra costs for issuing a smart card RC or if you choose to get the process completed through RTO Agent Services.
Form 34 is a mandatory document used for registering vehicle hypothecation with the Regional Transport Office (RTO). This form needs to be duly signed by the vehicle owner as well as the concerned bank or financial institution to validate the hypothecation process.
The process generally takes around 7 to 15 working days, depending on the pending workload at the respective RTO. However, with accurate documentation and support from RTO Agent Services, the chances of unnecessary delays can be minimized.
While certain states provide the facility through the Parivahan portal, in most cases, you will still need to visit the RTO for physical verification of documents.
